Celebrating the life of

Stephen Leffler Traub Sr.

July 05, 1922 - July 07, 2012

Stephen Leffler Traub Sr.

Stephen Leffler Traub, Sr., loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend, answered God's call on July 7, 2012.

Born July 5, 1922 to Edna Lillienthal Traub and Herbert Smith Traub, Sr., he attended lower schools in Savannah, went to Riverside Military Academy boarding school for a year, returned to Savannah and graduated from Savannah High School in June 1940.

He was the original Renaissance man, excelling in every facet of his long and exciting life. After enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942, he earned his pilots wings in May, 1944 as a Second Lieutenant. Upon returning home to Savannah, he began what became a 50-year career as District Manager for the Union Central Life Insurance Company. He extended that position to manage employer-employee relations for many of Savannah's premier businesses, including Solomon's Wholesale Drug Co., Haile Tobacco Co. and his brother Herb's Pirates' House Restaurant. His tireless efforts on behalf of all the people he served won him hundreds of life-long memorable relationships.

He felt a sense of civic pride and responsibility, and gave back to his community his entire adult life. He earned the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award, was a member of the Benedict Club and served on the Chatham County Board of Education, Savannah Recreation Commission, United Services Coordinating Council and, most recently, the Citizen Advisory Committee of the MPC, among others.

He was a talented musician, singer, and songwriter. He sang in several local Choirs and was a soloist at Mickve Israel Temple and Christian Science Church 17 years, and in recent times sang with his wife Elizabeth at Blessed Sacrament Church, where they were members.

In 2005, his deep religious convictions inspired him to compose the Christmas Oratorio, which was performed during Midnight Mass at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, as well as music for other Catholic Masses, including a special piece based on the Rosary. Also in 2005, he wrote a new school song for his alma mater, which was officially adopted by Savannah High School.

Known to many of his friends simply as "Fisherman," he was an avid saltwater angler. He loved to share stories of fishing in the 1930's and 40's, paddling out Half Moon River on the outgoing tide, casting for shrimp which were kept alive swimming on the leaky decks of rented wooden bateaus, fishing Mud Island and returning on the incoming tide.

He was predeceased by his parents Edna Lillienthal Traub and Herbert Smith Traub, brother Herbert Smith Traub, Jr., and previous wife Karilena Hohnerlein Traub.

He is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Elizabeth Traub, nee Cleary; children Claudia Traub Window, Stephen L. Traub, Jr. Linda, Brion Traub Ehret Phil, Eric I. Traub Rachel, step-children Katheryn Bonfield, Carl Bonfield, Gerry Bonfield Shannon, sister-in-law Dr. Geraldine Nichols and her partner Andres Avellaneda, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will have a Rosary service at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel on Monday, July 9, 2012 at 6:30 p.m.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church on Tuesday, July 10, 2012 at 10:00 a.m., followed by a private burial at Bonaventure Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests any remembrances be made in his memory to Hospice Savannah or Blessed Sacrament School Fund.
